private stuff

by andy on September 29th, 2007

Long time, no personal post as life’s been busy lately.

Let’s start with the university related stuff. I teamed up with Tom to write a master thesis about Information Retrieval and/or Preservation in social or organizational bounds. We’re currently investigating former work while writing a little toolkit too ease up our later work. As soon as it is ready for usage (and documented) we will publish it to the public

The other master thesis is also progressing, but not as a fast as I’d preferred. At least the overall direction and the generated artifacts are something to be proud of. I’m currently re-visioning the scope of my actual master thesis as more interesting topics emerged in the project. I just hope that not too much past work is lost. Stay tuned for some therapeutic Java related blog posts.

What’s happening on other fronts? I started taking climbing lessons. So far I had fun but am slowly convinced that my musculature ain’t build for that usage pattern. Maybe it will get better with more training. I’m currently feeling some success for each passed mounting.

I took a rather step than usual and enrolled for Philosophy. I watched and toyed with it in the last semesters but never really had the nerve to actually start with it. So if everything goes fine I should be able to finish most basic courses with end of January. Hopefully this should also be the finish date of at least one master thesis. I’m quite thrilled at the outlook at some discussing as opposed to the regular lessons I had during computer science.

Oh and one more note: In my ongoing search for courses at the sports university that I can quit after four to five lessons I’ve grown tired of Taiji and will try Pencak Silat this term. It sounds like Indonesian Taiji, if not I might have a problem. On the upside: this might be your perfect opportunity to beat the crap out of me.

After long and painful evaluation I ordered a Dell D630 to replace my aging D510. This was two months ago. It seems as if Dell has some problems with the manufacturer of its high-density 14″ wide-screen LCD panels. The next delivery data should be sometimes next week, but I’ve read rumors on the web that the problems will stay until the end of the year.  If so I will be thinking hard about canceling that order and switching to a IBM/Lenovo T61, alas there’s also a one month wait period for those.
So that long post should have made up for the passed time, blessed be.
