After the 4th Chuck Palahniuk book
I’ve just finished reading Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk. While all of his book were quite enjoyable, some stood out more others. All of them are written in a fresh and aggressive language. I liked it. The all deal with the tension between individual and society and the individual’s attempt of coping with it. All of them fail.
I’ve started with Fight Club. After keeping the film in good remembrance I wondered about the book. While it kept the same basic theme it diverted somehow from the film. I do think that the conflict between different aspects of yourself is one of the most powerful subjects ever been imagined. Also the movie totally botched up the ending compared to the film.
After that came Haunted. While not bad in itself I do not remember it as particularly good book. The beginning was great, some passages made me nearly fade (which sounds ridiculous afterwards) but the rest wasn’t that surprising either.
Invisible monster reminded me of a modern Antigone. It dealt with the conflict between individual and culture as well as a similar conflict between daughter and family. At least this book got a more surprising ending than “Haunted”.
The last book was “Survivor”. In my personal rating it comes close after Fight Club. While the later was about conflict this book was about denial and running away. It also had some nice twists like going toward the end: i.e. having backwards page and chapter numbers.
