TOOL live in concert

by andy on November 21st, 2006

After missing TOOL earlier this year I took no chance this time.

First things first: Their supporting act, Mastodon, was loud and funny as hell. I’m still not sure how good they really are. There were lots of interesting beat changes, but there’s still an ongoing debate if they were intended.

Tool’s concerts are just a whole-media experience. You’ve got the rapidly changing sounds, light and laser shows (okay, laser is light..), video screens, smoke. Just awesome.

Maynard’s emergence was highly anticipated, some guy collapsed behind me the minute after he appeared on stage. He was eccentric as ever. The (non-musical) highlight of the concert was Maynard telling the audience “people like to smoke, I like my throat” and putting on a gas mask with integrated microphone – that never came of again. The concert hall is an non-smoking area.
So how did this concert compare to last year’s A Perfect Circle concert? Even as the lead singer is the same there are few similarities between the two bands. The show was more expensive and technical but the simple “smoke and mirror”-stuff show that A Perfect Circle performed last time was more aesthetic in my eyes. Also Maynard had a better time last year.

After all: great concert, even if I was a little bit crestfallen.
I know the pieces fit cause I watched them tumble down
No fault, none to blame it doesnt mean I dont desire to Point the finger,
blame the other, watch the temple topple over.
To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication.

The poetry that comes from the squaring off between,
And the circling is worth it.
Finding beauty in the dissonance.
